The partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft, which seemed unshakable since 2019, is now experiencing a serious crisis. Sources from The Wall Street Journal report that OpenAI is so concerned about Microsoft’s actions that it is even considering options like a judicial review of the contract and public accusations of unfair competition.
The main reason for the escalation is OpenAI’s deal to acquire the startup Windsurf. This is a promising company developing AI-based code generation technologies. And although the acquisition is not yet finalized, it is already valued at approximately $3 billion. OpenAI fears that Microsoft, having access to some of the assets, could use Windsurf’s developments to enhance its own product—GitHub Copilot. Simply put, both companies are now playing in the same sandbox—code generation, AI solutions for developers—and no longer appear as allies, but rather as potential competitors.

Another point of tension is the cloud infrastructure. OpenAI wants to reduce its dependence on Azure, which until recently was the primary platform for deploying its models. Interestingly, it was Microsoft that once helped OpenAI grow to a global level by investing billions of dollars. But today, their alliance no longer seems to function as it used to. Neither side has provided official comments yet, but behind the scenes, tense negotiations are ongoing.
