Facebook is preparing to launch passkey login, a modern technology that allows users to access their accounts without a password. Instead of entering a traditional username and password combination, users will be able to verify their identity using device-based biometrics or a PIN code. This option will soon be available in the Facebook mobile app for both Android and iOS.

So, what exactly is a passkey? It’s a digital key stored directly on your device and used for secure authentication. When logging in, the system checks your fingerprint, face, or local access code without transmitting passwords that could be intercepted. This greatly reduces the risk of phishing attacks and helps protect users from account theft. The system is based on the WebAuthn standard, which means each key has two parts: the private key remains stored only on your device, while the public key is saved on Facebook’s servers. Even if someone gains access to one part, it’s not enough to hack the account.

Additionally, passkeys can be synchronized across multiple devices or recovered using SMS, email, or a hardware security key. Facebook says this innovation marks another step toward safer online identification without the need to remember complex passwords. In the future, the company plans to add passkey support to Messenger and Meta Pay, where it will be used for automatic payment data autofill, saving time and reducing risks during online purchases.

At the same time, traditional login methods aren’t going away — users will still be able to sign in using a password, two-factor authentication, or a physical key if they prefer. Passkey support is already being actively implemented by Google, Apple, Microsoft, and WhatsApp, as well as in popular password managers like 1Password and Dashlane. All this confirms a clear trend — digital security is entering a new era, and Facebook is keeping pace.
