Google has announced the start of testing a new feature called Audio Overviews, which allows users to get short voice summaries for certain search queries. Currently, the feature is available only to users in the United States through the experimental Search Labs platform.
When this option is enabled in search settings, users will see a small player in search results that plays an audio summary of the query topic. The text for these summaries is generated by Gemini, Google’s new artificial intelligence model specializing in content generation. According to the company, the audio format helps users grasp information more quickly and conveniently — especially when they don’t have time to read long texts or browse multiple pages.

Below the player, users will find additional relevant links to pages with more detailed information. There is also an option to rate how useful the voice overview was, helping Google improve the service’s quality. This innovation is part of Google’s broader strategy to develop search across multiple formats — text, visual, video, and now audio. The approach is particularly useful for people who spend a lot of time on the move or have limited screen access, such as while exercising or driving.
At the same time, voice overviews could change user behavior in search — fewer clicks on external sites, as more answers are now delivered directly in search results. This creates new challenges for content creators and advertisers alike. Currently, Audio Overviews are still in the testing phase, and Google is collecting user feedback to refine the feature and expand its availability in the future.
