Instagram is testing a repost function and gets a wave of blocking complaints

Instagram has introduced a long-awaited new feature—the repost function in the feed. While previously users could only share posts via Stories or manually copy links, a portion of users now have the ability to repost others’ content directly to their own feed. Meta believes this will help creators reach new audiences more quickly and promote content more conveniently without resorting to third-party tools.

Interestingly, a similar feature has long been available in Threads—Meta’s sister project—as well as in other social networks like TikTok and X. So, this is more of an overdue evolution of the platform rather than something entirely new. However, amid the positive news, Instagram has simultaneously found itself at the center of a scandal. Users are mass-complaining about sudden and, in their opinion, unjustified account blocks. People are posting on Reddit and X that their pages have been blocked without any rule violations, and the appeals they submit remain unanswered. The worst part is that some of these are business accounts, on which the owners’ income depends.

A petition has appeared on Change.org calling for a review of the blocking policy—it has already gathered over 4,000 signatures. Some users note that they were accused of distributing inappropriate content without any explanation or evidence provided. All of this is causing concern, as erroneous blocking can seriously harm one’s reputation.

Meta has not officially commented on the situation. Experts suggest the issue may be related to automated moderation algorithms that have malfunctioned again. Similar situations have occurred on other social networks, including Pinterest, where the company acknowledged a technical error, though it did not directly link it to artificial intelligence. While Instagram tests new features, users await answers to important questions about fairness and support from the platform.
